Indonesian art gets its time to shine
Event sees partnership with the founder and CEO of Art Stage Singapore and former Art Basel director, Lorenzo Rudolf
Jakarta, October 24, 2011—Indonesia’s burgeoning art scene finally comes of age this year with PMR Cube—a contemporary art and fashion event co-organized by the publisher of high-society brand-leader Indonesia Tatler. The event will be held from December 1–6 at Sampoerna Strategic Square in Jakarta.
Adding his name and brand to PMR Cube is Lorenzo Rudolf, 10-year fair director of Art Basel, the international art fair held each year in Switzerland. Rudolf will co-host the event’s climactic closing day, before moving on to focus on Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s new art event in January, where he is CEO and fair director.
PMR Cube is organized by local publishing giant Mobiliari Media Group alongside its sister company and magazine, the Singapore-based PMR. The event is expected to attract around 9,500 visitors over five days and will showcase more than 100 brand-new works of art in what the organizers are calling “Contemporary Culture Interplay.”
“The new Indonesian arts scene is absolutely booming,” said Millie Stephanie, CEO of Mobiliari Media Group, which publishes the local edition of Tatler as well as other high-profile magazines.
“Now it needs a local, regional and international platform upon which a powerful spotlight can shine, to bring it to the attention of the whole world. PMR Cube is that platform,” she added.
Millie, along with fellow art enthusiasts Patty Kaunang and Rina Salim, founded PMR in Singapore, with the aim of focusing on contemporary arts, events and lifestyles. Working closely with Mobiliari Media Group and Indonesia Tatler, this is their first showcase event.
Jim Supangkat will curate the show. Born in Makassar, Indonesia, Jim founded the Indonesia New Art Movement in 1975, and was awarded the Prince Claus Award for outstanding cultural achievement in 1997. Local art expert Asmudjo Jono Irianto will co-curate, along with fashion co-curators Dian Muljadi and Sebastian Gunawan.
Art Stage’s Lorenzo Rudolf, meanwhile, will host the final evening of the show. Rudolf is the founder and organizer of Art Stage Singapore, a new, international art fair that juxtaposes the Western art scene with the best and most exciting of Asia’s artistic creativity, as well as the most important, interesting and stunning artists and galleries. Art Stage Singapore will be held at Marina Bay Sands on January 12-15, and partnered with PMR Cube.
“The old saying ‘all good things come in threes’ rarely rings more true than here: on the one hand, the unique Indonesian contemporary art scene, which is incomparable in Asia, and on the other, the unique PMR personalities and their stunning PMR Cube,” said Rudolf.
“Last but not least, we have our unique Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s premier platform and meeting point for outstanding artists, collectors, gallerists, curators, art enthusiasts and art lovers. I’m glad and proud to be part of this unique ‘summit’,” he added.
Said Millie Stephanie: “Our audiences are exactly the same, and there will be a direct relationship between guests visiting PMR Cube, and then visiting Art Stage Singapore. It’s a marriage made in heaven.”
